How much headroom should I leave in my mixes for mastering?

Don't clip your master fader and everything will be fine. Additional headroom is not necessary in digital audio.

 

Should I use buss compression on my mix?

 

If you have buss compression on your mix and you like how it sounds then by all means leave it on, but consider sending an uncompressed mix as well.

If however, you are preparing stems for mastering while using buss compression  there are some things you should be aware of. The goal of buss compression is to have the entire mix both triggering and being affected by the compressor. How do you achieve this when rendering stems?
